Removing Stored Information On Your Computer
As an avid Internet user, I have become increasingly concerned about my personal information that is stored without my knowledge on my computer. I know that hackers can get into just about anything, and I didn’t want to become a victim. What’s in the dark places on my laptop?
I do a lot of searching on the Internet and visit a lot of sites where you can make purchases. I signed into buy.com one day and got the prompt, “welcome back John” and was startled. ‘How in the world do they have that information and what else do they have on me?’ which caused me concern. So I did a little research.
As we hear more and more about people’s identity being stolen, this became a big concern for me. I’ve worked many years at maintaining my good credit standing and I did not want some low life stealing my personal information. Not if I could help it.
I have a personal experience with this through a friend of mine. She was opening mail one day and noticed what she thought was an invitation to open a credit card to a local computer store. As she was about to throw it out, she opened it and realized there was a balance owed.
As you can guess, my friend did not have a credit card for this store so she called the card company. She learned that there was a computer purchased online with her information and it was sent to another location. And all of this was done online which was even more shocking.
My friend canceled the credit card right away and started the dispute process. They would never divulge the address of the delivery and it took her six months to clear this up. You can only imagine her frustration when she decided to cancel all her other credit cards and today she still checks her credit report regularly!
Take the necessary steps to keep this from happening by following just a few easy steps. When you search the Internet, make sure that you do a regular clean up on your computer. Clear all cache files, temporary internet files and your history by going into your start menu, click control panel, Internet options and there on the general information page you can delete all these files.
One more file still lurks down in the belly of your computer. It’s called a Index.dat file, however, you can not remove it. I’m not really sure why but Microsoft does not allow manual removal of this file so it will sit there until the day your hard drive is wiped clean.
I do have one suggestion, it’s a program called PC Confidential. It does provide you with the tools that can help you keep your computer clean and your information out of the hands of the hackers. Just being diligent about protecting your personal information is a step in the right directions. No one ever thinks this will happen to him or her but do you really want to chance it?
