Puppies are so adorable; they can melt anyone’s heart. They are curious, fun, playful and cuddley and we tend to enjoy every part of having a new puppy until they do their duty in the house and then we have to contend with the biggest problem and difficulty of having a new puppy, house training.

House training a puppy can be difficult and frustrating sometimes. But we all need to remember that a puppy is still just a baby. He has not yet learned how to control himself and until he gets older to where he has some of the control he will need you to be patient and loving as you spend quality time with him teaching him what is admissible.

At 12 weeks of age a puppy may need to go outside as often as every 15-20 minutes and even more if he is actively playing. A resting puppy will not have to go out quite as frequently so during the night you can have more time especially if he is sound asleep. Do not wake a sleeping puppy just make sure to take him out to potty as soon as he awakens.

Consistency is the most crucial aspect of house training. Be consistent in taking him out on his leash to the same spot every time. Be consistent about issuing the same commands such as “potty now” every time. And be consistent with your abundant praise and special treats when he does finally go.

If you make the potty training a positive experience for your puppy your potty training will be completed sooner. That means that you will need to be patient and loving even when there is an accident. Just take him outside and praise him when he does it correctly and ignore it when he does it wrong. Your puppy wants to make you happy so it is crucial that you do not do anything that will confound him.

It is doubtful that you will be able to be with your puppy all the time so when you need to be away from your puppy you should put him in a crate. Puppies and dogs are natural den animals and they like to have a small space of their own. Also, puppies will rarely dirty their own place so a crate will assist you in teaching your puppy how to control himself.

Consistency is the most important part of house training. Make sure that you use a consistent command and take him to the same place every outing so that there is no confusion for him. Having a positive experience will also help him to learn faster and you will be finished with your house training earlier.
