Home entertainment was revolutionized in the 1950’s by the availability of television sets for personal use. From the time TVs were made available at reasonably affordable prices, they have monopolized family time.
Prior to the invention of television, families often enjoyed special times listening to the radio. It was very common to see entire families together in the living room to listen to a specific program. Of course, old time radio was different than most of the radio programs of today. Instead of trying to shock listeners with extreme viewpoints or overload them with a specific type of music, radio offered story time for the entire family.
Radio was a wonderful family event but technology changed everything. And it changed quickly. Although the invention of the television began as early as the 1830’s, it took over 100 years for the technology to make itself workable and readily available. Once they were available they took the place of radio in short order. Despite the large box, no color images and abysmal reception televisions still became the main attraction of many homes.
In the sixty years since televisions became common in the home, there has been a complete transformation of the product. Images are true to life and colors are vibrant. The TV itself has transformed as well. Long gone are the unsightly boxes that previously contained a projection TV. In its place is a sleek, flat screen design that is so popular that it is difficult to find a modern home that does not have at least one flat screen TV.
Even though image quality and the aesthetics of the set have improved, many would agree that program quality has decreased in many ways. No longer are TV programs designed exclusive for family viewing. The 2010 TV viewer will primarily find programs that are not appropriate for a family to watch together. Profanity, violence and nudity are commonplace. Therefore parents must be diligent.
Almost all people spend time in front of the TV every day of the week. From TV programs to video games, modern families are frequently plugged in!
So, with the great draw of the ever entertaining TV, anyone would think having televisions in the house would bring families together. It is interesting to note that as TVs become even more readily available, families purchase more of them. Subsequently, you might find several TVs in one home. The result is that families that might have been spending time together in front of the radio in years gone by are now spending time alone. They watch their own programs in their own spaces while the rest of their family watch their own programs in their own spaces. It is a sad fact that television viewing is rarely a form of family entertainment any more. It almost makes you wish for days gone by.
