While deciding which safari company to use when looking at Kalahari desert safaris, one may want to consider the many areas one may choose to visit in such regard. However, one of the most beautiful and active for wildlife in this region is the Kalahari desert. As such, several desert safari trips are available in this area. However, before going on such a safari, one must plan well in advance to assure that all requirements related to such a trip are covered. For, at times, not only does one need a passport but vaccinations when traveling in such areas.
Also, before making a final decision on which area of the African desert one may wish to visit, first one may want to know a little more about the Kalahari desert and the wildlife often seen therein. For, this area, unlike other parts of the desert offers both plateau and desert which can be great viewing areas when seeking to watch such wildlife. In addition, as the area offers both semi-arid and arid sands which extend beyond nine hundred square kilometers or 350,000 square miles which includes some areas of Namibia and most of Botswana, it also remains one of the most active for wildlife viewing. As such, there are both great grazing areas and standing pools of water where wildlife can often be seen taking a drink or grazing, especially just after heavy rains which often occur each Spring.
So, with the standing pools of water and open land available to graze, this area has seen some of the most active wildlife in relation to going on such a safari. Still, even with the rainy seasons, rainfall amounts only reach an approximate 3 1/2 to 7 1/2 inches of rainfall per year which while not a lot can at least sustain some plant and animal life within the region. Unlike many other areas, in which some wildlife may roam, as such animals can cross the desert in search of water; However when it comes to plants, no plants could ever survive as these areas see little, if any rainfall, at any time during the year.
Of course, due to extreme summer temperatures, individuals wishing to travel to the area may want to plan such a safari for Spring or Fall, either during or after the rainy season rather than during hot Summer months. For, not only is one going to have a much more enjoyable experience related to the weather but also in relation to the amount of wildlife one may hope to see on such a journey.
Also, as the basin of the Kalahari covers an additional 970,000 square miles, one may want to plan to go on a multi-day safari when and where possible. For, while a day trip can be a great deal of fun, the more opportunities one has to see wildlife in a variety of areas, the better. In addition, the Okavango, the only river within this part of Africa flows into a delta in the Northwest in which many marshes have formed against such wetlands providing another area that is rich with a variety of wildlife.
As to what type of wildlife can be seen in this area, often one can see a great deal of giraffe, elephant and at times, lions and cheetahs. However, lion and cheetah sightings are far rarer than that of the elephants and giraffe who can often be seen grazing or taking a drink from one of the many standing pools of water during and after the rainy season. However, the best place to see a great deal of wildlife is near an Omuraba-Traverse, which is another name for a dried out riverbed, in which many such animals can often be found grazing throughout the year.
To this end, if one is going to go on one of these Kalahari desert safaris, one may want to check out the many different operators available to run such safaris in the Kalahari Desert. This is because this area of the African semi-desert provides both desert and plateau; As such, one can often see a great deal of wildlife, whether grazing or drinking from one of the many standing pools during each rainy season. Therefore, whether one is most interested in seeing the massive semi-desert or the wildlife which roam therein, one most likely wants to cover as much land and wet areas as possible during the length of such a safari.
